Friday – Gold Coin Entry

Friday’s entry will be for a gold coin only! If you’re not sure what a convention is all about, we think the best way to find out is to try it out! Friday’s program will start at 4pm and run through until midnight, and registration will be open from 3pm.

Remember that pre-con membership will close May 31st, and your only option after that will be the at door rates. At the door, the full con costs are $250 full/$195 concession; Saturday and Sunday are $120/$95 each day; and Monday is $75/$60.

Competition Winners

Congratulations to the winners of our competition!

Although we originally offered prizes in two categories, written and non-written, we only received written entries. Thus we will be awarding three prizes, of $250, $150, and $100.

First Prize: Pattern for knitting a galaxy, Stephanie Lai

Second Prize: The Armour, Jessica Reid

Third Prize: Stitch the Sun, Liz Barr

The prizes will be presented at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday evening, and all three winning stories will be printed in the convention book. Thanks to Lizbt Action for coordinating the judging and the competition, and thanks to the Australian Science Fiction Foundation for sponsoring it!

Writing Workshops

We’ve got a few writing workshops lined up for Continuum 8!

Alan Baxter will run a workshop looking at the things that make a fight scene in a story read as realistically as possible, while maintaining excitement and pace. By looking at the various factors that go into a real fight, paying attention to the things that we train for when we learn to fight, we can write fight scenes that stay exciting without breaking the rules of realism that shatter believability. This is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Later in the weekend, we’ll have a hands-on, one hour workshop with Alison Goodman who will take you through some great diagnostic tools that will help you improve your scene-writing skills. Participants should bring a scene that they have written. Sign up for this at the registration desk.

Unfortunately the workshop with Kelly Link filled up really fast – if you’d like to be on a waiting list, you can email info@continuum.org.au, but it is a very small class.

We’ll also be running drawing & making stuff workshops – stay tuned for those annoucements!

Invited Guest: Lucy Sussex

In awesome guest news, Lucy Sussex is an invited guest, thanks very much to Ticonderoga Press. She is a fantastic local Melbourne author, and has won several Ditmars, an Aurealis Award, a Bertram Chandler Award, and a Julius Vogel Award. Her fantastic collection of stories Thief of Lives was recently released by 12 Planet Press, and we’re really looking forward to her contribution to the program.

Competition closing soon!

We’ve extended the deadline for competition entries – there’s now one week left to get your entry in! First prize is $200. See all the rules here and good luck!

Accommodation

The hotel is filling up fast – if you’re planning to stay at the Rydges on Swanston book soon! If you’re only staying for the nights of the convention – Friday to Monday nights – you can book via the website. If you want to stay outside of those nights, you will have to ring the hotel and book through their reservations desk: +61 3 9347 7811. Let them know that you’re coming for Continuum 8: Craftonomicon to get our rate.

Small Press and Craft Market!

We hope you’re as excited about the craft theme for this year’s con as we are!
And how could we have a crafty con without a traditional Sunday market? The market will also feature craft demonstrations by some fantastic artisans who also happen to be fans.

We’re looking for people to sell their wares, preferably items with geek appeal or a SFF leaning. Stalls are limited and are on a first come first served basis.

Cost:
Members: $30 for a whole table, $15 for half table
Non-members:$50 for a whole table, $25 for half
Table dimensions are 1.8m x 0.8m

Payment may be made by direct deposit before the day or cash on the day.

So if you know someone who makes awesome stuff, or would like a stall yourself, please email programming@continuum.org.au as soon as possible.

Children’s programming plans

We want to put together a children’s program, but we’re not sure what age groups we should be concentrating on. Can you please email info@continuum.org.au if you’d be interested in children’s programming? And hey – if you’re interested in running any children’s program items, let us know that too! We’ve got ideas and materials but we’re going to need some more volunteers to make it all work.

Also, if you were interested in doing a reading or a rant, we have a number of slots still available. The microphone will be yours for 15 minutes! What do you have to say? email programming@continuum.org.au to arrange your time.

Programming Update!

It’s just over a month til the con and the programming team are in over-drive pulling everything together. We know you can’t wait to see the finished schedule but you’ll just have to be a bit more patient.

The list of panels has been updated with new additions, even if you have already taken a look, it’s worth another perusal. Unless we get more participants for some of those panels they may not go ahead, so if there’s one you really want to see make sure you or someone you know volunteers!

The deadline for putting your hand up for panels is FRIDAY 18th MAY.
